SHERRY RUBEL has been immersed in photography since childhood, beginning in her father’s darkroom. He was a professional, award-winning photographer and filmmaker/editor as well as a leader in New Jersey theatre as a director and actor. She essentially grew up in the darkroom, as well as on and off the stage. While participating in CAPA, the Creative and Performing Arts camp created by her Mother, she was introduced to a wide variety of visual arts, dance, theatre, and music on a daily basis for ten summers. She attended Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University as a Dance and Theatre major; followed by work with the Institute for Arts & Humanities holding a variety of positions over 10 years. Sherry enthusiastically states, “ART has been my life.”

She has owned her own photography studio since 1990 earning a reputation for her keen eye for black and white portraits both as a fine art photographer and a photo journalist. Formerly, a staff photographer with the award-winning Crossroads Theater and freelancer for Patch.com.

Contributing photographer for the NYC Jazz record, and  developing other music oriented photo projects, Sherry has worked most recently on independent projects stemming from her time documenting Tent City, a controversial homeless encampment. She was 1 of 6 out of 100’s of applicants to be chosen for Solo Exhibit at New Jersey Emerging Artist 2015 - Monmouth Museum, had Galleries 1 & 2 for a Solo Exhibit at Ocean County Artist Guild in June 2016 and had a Solo Exhibit - "Stolen Dignity, Latent Souls" at Camden Fireworks  –  April 28-May 10 of 2019.  A collection of 25 "Living Legacies" portraits was purchased for permanent exhibition at the Actors' Fund Home in Englewood, NJ.

The Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice and Sherry are developing a photographic exhibit and book addressing the narrative of women playing jazz. Shifting the Jazz Narrative: photo essays of women instrumentalists, we seek to contribute to the corrective work of reshaping the way jazz is perceived and presented.

"Beneath the Underground" is a photo-journalism project documenting the free jazz, post-punk and avant-garde community of music, literary, visual, and theatrical artists within outsider NYC. Birthed on social media, plans are being laid for publication of a book featuring the artful photography of Sherry Rubel and prose and poetry of John Pietaro, amplifying the hidden stories and faces within the creative experience.

Sherry has been called upon to document a variety of events such as behind the scenes video projects within the NYC music & dance industries. Her long term goal has always been to return to those places where her yearning to photograph peoples’ stories propelled her into her career as a photographer.

She is an accomplished professional whose photographic range consists of music/concerts, celebrities, news, CD and book covers, newspapers and magazines, photojournalism, portraits, children, events and public relations. She hopes to continue using her work to help raise awareness about social issues and more.

Naturally having spent so much time in the darkroom,  I focus primarily on black & white imagery.  I take great pride in working in low light situations without the use of flash,  trying to create the strongest natural images that not only tell a story, but captures the spitit of those i'm working with.

If you sign up for updates, you will get notified about new projects, print sales, and shows.

Thank you all for your

continued support.
